Tips for Selecting the Best Person for an Entry Level ICT Role

Staff You Can Afford

Entry level pay for an entry level role. Under the program an employee is classified as an apprentice or trainee and is paid accordingly. A traineeship is a 2-year apprenticeship.

Case study:

Kate has completed year 12, is over 18, and starts a full time 2-year apprenticeship in July 2025.

Her duties include installing and/or supporting IP telephony systems and devices. She is employed as a Telecommunications Technician and paid under the Telecommunications Services Award (MA000041).
During her first year Kate’s weekly gross wage is $907.92.

Funded Training

Structured training is integrated into the employment arrangement. During the 2-year term an employee will complete a nationally recognised qualification delivered by a Registered Training Organisation. This will be funded by the state government.

Case study:

Kate is doing a 2-year apprenticeship as a Telecommunications Technician. During her apprenticeship she will complete a ICT30524 Certificate III in Telecommunications Technology. The training can be delivered 100% online and will be funded by the state government. She will be mentored by a qualified person in the workplace.

Kate works 38 hours per week. 3 hours will be allocated to her studies.

Cash Incentives

Some occupations attract cash incentives which are paid by the Commonwealth government. There are cash incentives for both the employer and employee. Conditions apply.

Case study:

Kate has started a 2-year apprenticeship as a Telecommunications Technician in July 2025. During her apprenticeship she will complete a ICT30524 Certificate III in Telecommunications Technology. Both her occupation and qualification are on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List. This means that both Kate and her employer are eligible for a $5000 cash incentive from the Commonwealth government during the term of her apprenticeship.
